Actionable voice prompts including “posted speed limit 55” and “following too close” eliminate ambiguity and allow the driver to correct driving behavior in real-time. The ADAS is supported by three main components, the forward-facing camera, an associated mobile application, as well as a cloud-based server.

Innovation and advancements in the automotive camera industry

Modern vehicles are being designed to obtain a more comprehensive look at their surroundings in a new light. This includes technologies that enhance the vehicles and the driver’s visibility in varying conditions, identify objects in blind spots, and even aid night vision. Several manufacturers and vendors from the automotive and peripheral industries are working towards developing innovative and progressive new technologies that help enhance not just vehicular safety, but the overall driving experience.

To illustrate, Honda is set to unveil a new technology in its upcoming Honda e electric car – side mirror automotive cameras. These wide-angle cameras significantly reduce blind spots and are smaller than conventional side mirrors, which mitigates the risk of them coming into contact with passing vehicles. Furthermore, these cameras have a much smaller footprint, which helps in reducing aerodynamic drag and improves fuel consumption.

Meanwhile, ZF has also made a new addition to its ADAS S-Cam 4 product portfolio, with a forward-facing ADAS camera, the Tri-Cam. This smart camera has a three-lens design, the first of its kind in the automotive space. The three lenses include a fish-eye lens with 150-degree FoV (field-of-view), a telephoto lens with 28-degree FoV, and a standard lens with a 52-degree FoV. In addition to this, the technology is also hailed as the smallest multi-lens camera in the industry, owing to a flexible and compact mechanical design and application potential across a range of vehicle types with diverse windshield angles.
