UTVs or utility terrain vehicles are large and powerful vehicles that are capable of traversing difficult terrain are also able to seat passengers side by side. These vehicles are further built with ample amount of storage space. These vehicles are mostly used to haul supplies and equipment in places that make using a truck almost impossible or impractical.

In comparison to ATVs, UTVs are much larger and are generally operated by a steering wheel instead of handlebars, also having gas as well as brake pedals. Most of the utility terrain vehicles come equipped with a roll cage or bars, which makes it much more safer for these vehicles in getting through rougher terrains as compared to ATVs.

The US UTV market is bifurcated into various sections in terms of displacement, propulsion type, application and regional landscape.

Talking of displacement, the US UTV market is classified into above 800cc, 400-800cc and below 400 cc. Among these, the below 400 cc segment will witness a high market demand over the coming time period, mainly from recreational applications.

With respect to propulsion type, the market is categorized into electric, diesel, and gasoline. Among these, the diesel segment will witness robust demand over the coming time period. This growth is mainly ascribed to the ability of diesel engines to provide enhanced power and torque to the vehicle.

UTVs with diesel-based engines generally require very less maintenance and are much more reliable than their counterparts, like the gasoline-powered engines. Additionally, since diesel engines are more robustly built to bear higher compression, they are known to last longer in comparison to gasoline engines. Diesel engines also offer more mileage since they can deliver nearly 30% better fuel economy than standard gasoline engines.

In terms of application, the US market for UTV is segmented into military, recreation, sports and utility. Increasing number of adventure sports events and growing youth participation will propel the demand from sports application segment. The Polaris RZR is perhaps the most well-known model in this segment. In fact, sport models are very popular so there is no shortage of novel as well as used models for sale.
