Minnesota-based medical center, Mayo Clinic reportedly announced that it will enter a joint venture which will operate a “mega-hospital” in the United Arab Emirates. The clinic receives patients from both the Middle East and around the world.

The Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City is a four-tower campus located in Abu Dhabi that is expected to open during the early 2020s. Mayo officials announced that the institution will be run by a joint venture that Mayo clinic has become the shareholder of. The officials further stated that the long-term aim of the institution is to have this project grow into a caliber center of capabilities and expertise in diagnostic medicine and complex care.

Apparently, the financial details have not yet been disclosed between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA, a private company) and Mayo Clinic. Sources stated that the non-profit Mayo Clinic will be investing proceeds from the venture into research, practice and education. Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) happens to be the largest government-owned hospitals run by SEHA across the Arabian Peninsula.

Majority of the investment made by Mayo into the project comprises expertise and knowledge that it has been sharing. Revenue that will be obtained by the clinic in the joint venture will be passed on to the Mayo Clinic Foundation, a non-profit organization.

According to sources, the hospital has been constructed to hold about 741 beds across a floor space of 3.2 million square feet, which also includes four patient towers as well as facilities like rooftop gardens. The hospital has robotic surgery suites including 132 beds for patients put under intensive-care units.

Didehban further added that both SEHA and Mayo share their values of putting their patients first and at the center. The organizations also want to make sure that they deliver healthcare of the best quality to their patients.
