SSE accelerates Net Zero Acceleration Programme with new carbon goals

By Pranali Mehta

SSE plc, UK’s national clean energy and FTSE-100 low-carbon infrastructure company, has recently declared that it will ramp up its renewable energy output and reduce carbon intensity by 80% until 2030 as it boosts its net zero action plan.

These targets are in line with UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and were being set forth to drive faster decarbonization across the next decade.

It will also empower the connection of renewable electricity generation of about 20GW to the north of Scotland's electricity transmission network and empower approximately one million heat pumps and two million electric vehicles and on its electricity, distribution networks in southern central England and north of Scotland until 2030.

SSE's 2030 Goals are already connected to executive compensation, but it is also proposing to increase the focus on sustainability overall and emphasize it more for the longer term.

The goals increase the company's ambition towards the climate and its initiative for net-zero, which demonstrated that in November, the business divulged a £12.5 billion Net-Zero Acceleration Programme.

In the last 18 months, SSE has become a leader on its transition to net-zero. It ranks at the top of the World Benchmarking Association's just transition valuation of 180 global companies.

SSE marked a new ground when the announcement of SDG-aligned 2030 Goals was made in 2019, and this update makes the targets more elongating amid solid delivery in the last three years.

SSE'S Chief Sustainability Officer, Rachel Mcewen said that net-zero accomplishment would require a persistent focus on carbon reduction. However, developing the low-carbon infrastructure and needed assets can inspire good and offer economic values for communities and well-paid green jobs.

SSE was the first company to link premeditated business goals to the UN's Sustainable Development goals and link it directly with these global goals to supervise remuneration. The firm is delighted about the progress made since then, which means it is in line for stretching those 2030 targets further.
