Singapore to conduct an electricity import pilot with Malaysia

Singapore is taking multiple steps to achieve a greener energy mix by initiating plans towards commencing an electricity import pilot program with Malaysia. The country is also making substantial R&D investments on emanating low-carbon technologies and the development of reliable solar energy capacities within its boundaries, cite sources.
According to the Singapore Minister for Trade and Industry, Chan Chun Sing, the country will take to a bright green spark at the global level, where applications and ideas would inspire the creation of high quality and more sustainable living environments. In view of the country’s plans for an over two-year electricity import pilot with Malaysia, the country’s Energy Market Authority has planned on promulgating a request for the proposal by March 2021. Accordingly, electricity imports could commence as early as the end of 2021 through the present electricity interconnector between the two countries.
The previous November, two billionaires from Australia invested tens of millions of dollars in a solar project that supplied power from northern Australian region to Singapore through the longest underwater high-voltage cable at the global level. Reports cite that Singapore is slated to ramp up its drive to tap more sunshine, with an objective to achieve 1.5 GWp of solar deployment by 2025, meeting up to 2 per cent of the country’s overall energy demand in the same year.
The electricity import pilot has the potential to help the country in enhancing its energy resilience by accessing clean energy from regional countries. As stated by Mr. Chan at the Singapore International Energy Week, the country has been working in close collaboration with Malaysia and is grateful for its strong support in this endeavor.
Being a disadvantaged country for alternative energy, Singapore has always been paving the way to finding creative methods of tackling its energy challenges. The country will firmly withstand this challenge, similar to how it has dealt with COVID-19, added Mr. Chan.
