ORC Industrial Waste Heat to Power Market 2022 By Top Trends, Outlook & Forecast To 2027

By Ronak Bora

There has been a tremendous industrial expansion all over the world in the last several years. With this expansion, need for uninterrupted electricity and power supply in the industries has also come into the picture which has urged the industries to invest in various power generation technologies. In this regard, ORC waste heat to electricity systems are gaining a huge popularity as they have the ability to generate electricity using multiple sources like renewables including geothermal energy, biomass, solar energy, etc., conventional fuels and waste heat from industrial processes, engines, gas turbines, waste incinerators.

Besides their ability to efficiently produce electricity, ORC systems are also gaining massive traction globally due to growing awareness regarding climatic changes, sustainable development and enforcement of strict regulatory scenario for GHG emissions.

On account of the accelerating product adoption, ORC industrial waste heat to power market is expected to gain a massive momentum by recording cumulative installation of over 750 MW by 2027.

Declining prices, rising consumer awareness and ongoing technological developments are some of the factors that are further stimulating the penetration of ORC systems. For instance, in 2019, Siemens and Turboden launched a system named Heat ReCycle, which reportedly includes a Gas Turbine power plant with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology for efficient waste heat recovery. According to the company, this system can effectively meet the rising demand for simple, reliable and water-free solutions.

ORC industrial waste heat to power systems are being increasingly adopted in steel and metal industry as these are energy-intensive industries offering high potential for waste heat recovery. For example, in the integrated steel mills, heat can be recovered from coke ovens, oxygen furnaces and blast furnaces. Availability of numerous high temperature processes and burgeoning demand for onsite power generation are providing ample opportunities for the installation of ORC-WHP systems in steel and heavy metal industries.

Citing an instance, in 2020, prominent ORC player Turboden collaborated with steel company ORI Martin, Centro Servizi Multisettoriale Tecnologico (CSMT), COGEN Europe, Rina Consulting and district heat provider A2A to start-up HeatLeap, the EU-funded project. The innovative project is reportedly aimed at capturing low temperature from steel plant of ORI Martin in Brescia for district heating.

ORC industrial waste heat to power industry is witnessing robust expansion across the Asia Pacific region owing to robust industrial growth coupled with elevating demand for distributed power systems in the region. Growing demand for power from large scale industries is fueling the deployment of industrial waste heat recovery units positively influencing the business space.
