New Expro tech to cut about 150 tons of CO2 emissions from rigs annually

Energy services business, Expro is spearheading industry efforts to meet environmental regulations with the introduction of a digital system that may help drilling vendors and operators to cut an estimated 146 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

While there have been several digital breakthroughs in the oil and gas sector, tubular running services (TRS) have generally trailed behind. However, Expro is advancing rig floor automation with the help of its iTONGTM technology which is intended to safeguard workers while also reducing emissions.

It is predicted that each installation will save operators $2 million yearly and roughly 50 hours of rig time.

The iTONG system, the most technologically sophisticated one push button tubular make-up option available in the market, enables the operator to manage, carry out, confirm, and authenticate each connection make-up using a tablet or their control chair.

By pushing a single button, it guarantees that junctions of casing and tubing may be produced to a certain torque or severed in an automated procedure.

A rig utilizing iTONG may cut yearly emissions from rig time, travel, and lodging by an estimated 146 tonnes annually, which is the same as removing 58 flights of 10 hours each from Oslo to Houston in a year. This is possible by reducing the number of people needed for tubing operations.

Expro specialists are available this week at Stand 2200 at ONS 2022 in Stavanger to talk with conference attendees about the system.

iTONG allows easy integration into existing automated rig operations and marks a critical step toward completely autonomous tubular running, said Jeremy Angelle, Vice President of Well Construction.

Digital solutions are being used more often to improve operations, increase dependability for well integrity, and decrease the number of people working on the rig floor, which has a positive impact on safety, efficiency, and operating costs across the industry.
