Flap Rudder Market Is Projected To Witness Significant Gains During 2022–2027

By Rahul Varpe

The flap rudder market is slated to witness considerable growth over the coming years owing to rising seaborne trade, increasing number of offshore development projects, and rising marine tourism. A rudder is a device which is used for maneuvering as well as steering a vessel. These are hydrofoils which are rotating on a vertical axis. In larger vessels, the rudder is usually turned by steam, hydraulic or electrical machinery. Whereas, in small craft, the rudder is functioned manually by a handle termed a helm or tiller.

A flap rudder comprises of a blade having a trailing edge flap which is activated by a hydraulic or mechanical system, further producing a variable flap as a typical function of the rudder angle. This type of rudder produces more side force than a conventional rudder of same size could produce.

Flap rudder also gives a higher lift per rudder angle, with a 60 to 70% higher lift in comparison to standard rudder. Additionally, the high balanced place enhances the maneuvering features at typically low speeds mainly by blocking the forward thrust of the propeller. Apart from high speeds, the leading edge of the rudder could also be twisted to enhance the cavitation and efficiency features of the rudder. Also, high lift based flap rudders are designated for vessels requiring better maneuverability than a classic rudder could provide.

The flap rudder market is segmented in terms of flap material, fit, ship, and regional landscape.

In terms of ship, the overall flap rudder market is categorized into ferries & passenger ships, container ships, general cargo ships, offshore vessels, oil & gas carriers, bulk carriers, and others. Among these, offshore vessels segment will witness considerable demand over the coming time period. The segmental growth is attributed to the increasing number of offshore development projects.

The general cargo ships segment is slated to grow at a CAGR of more than 3.5% over the projected time period. Ferries & passenger ships segment will witness high growth owing to the rising marine tourism. This trend will also trigger product sales within ferries & passenger ships.

The others segment includes fishing vessels, tugs, and chemical tankers among many others. This segment is expected to cross more than $20 million by the end of 2027.

From a regional frame of reference, rising seaborne trade is likely to augment the market growth within North America region in the upcoming time period. Flap rudder market in Latin America will exceed a valuation of $5 million by the end of forecast period.

Meanwhile, Middle East & Africa region is likely to witness a respectable CAGR of over 2.5% through the forecast time period.
