Acciona buys 24% stake in French floating offshore wind firm Eolink

Acciona Energía, a Spanish company developing renewable energy projects, has reportedly acquired around 24% of the capital of the Eolink, a firm that develops cost-effective fluctuating wind parks.

The move is subjected to specific conditions following a financing round unveiled by the French startup to develop its fluctuating offshore wind technology and take forward the development of its first 5MW unit being a commercial technology.

Furthermore, the entry of Acciona Energia into the capital of Eolink is estimated to solidify the financial structure of the startup for its development in the short and medium-term.

Established in November 2015, Eolink aims to pioneer the floating wind concept where four arms replace the typical single-pole supporting turbine.

According to Acciona Energia, this design will empower a better structure and improve load distribution, lowering the maintenance and installation operations.

Additionally, the wind turbine's anchoring system will help shift its position naturally to face the wind, maximizing its performance and optimizing costs.

The primary pre-commercial component is estimated to be fitted at the SEM-REV test location off Le Croisic (France) coast in 2023.

Eolink's floating wind turbines, with a height of 150 meters and 5MW capacity, will offer enough electricity to power around 3,500 homes.

It goes without saying that offshore wind technology is vital for energy transition, and it is expected to showcase enormous growth in the coming years.

According to a recent report, the overall installed offshore wind capacity is estimated to reach 235GW by 2030, of which 60GW would be deployed in the European Union.

The gravity-based solutions that are ideal for shallower waters are at an innovative development stage, but the detached solutions which are required for deeper waters have not touched the commercial level of maturity till now.
