Samsung is reportedly planning to double the shipments of Galaxy phones with Exynos chipsets in the year 2022. The move will help the South Korean electronics giant reduce its reliance on Qualcomm processors amidst the global chip shortage.
For a while now, Samsung has been relying on Qualcomm or its in-house Exynos chipsets in its high-end smartphones. Consumers from the United States and China have long shown more interest in Galaxy phones with Snapdragon chips, while the rest of the world has preferred Exynos-based smartphones owing to their more affordable nature.
Samsung is now planning to expand the proportion of Exynos chipsets in Galaxy phones from 20% to around 60%. The development comes after the world's largest chipmaker proposed to construct a new USD 17 billion fabrication plant in Texas to bolster its global production capabilities.
The chip supply crisis has compelled even the most established and prominent automobile and electronics corporations to lower production, further resulting in delays in product deliveries.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics aims to integrate its chips into Volkswagen's vehicle infotainment, which are being developed by competitor LG Electronics.
Developed by Samsung’s chip design business, LSI, one of the new 5G chips could allow users to download high-quality video content while in transit. The other is claimed to be a power management chip that can potentially stabilize and provide a continuous electricity supply.
It is worth noting here that both Samsung and LG Electronics have been gearing up to make most of the global electric vehicle market and the swift electrification of the automotive industry.
